Place the keyword in the H1, URL, first 100 words, and meta title. Avoid keyword overlap between pages in the same silo—each page must own its search intent.

STEP 3: DESIGN THE URL STRUCTURE TO MATCH THE HIERARCHY

URLs should mirror the pyramid. Example: /gardening/vegetables/tomatoes/. Use hyphens, lowercase letters, and no stop words. Keep URLs under 60 characters. Avoid dates, session IDs, or parameters that dilute link equity.

STEP 4: BUILD A FLAT NAVIGATION MENU

The main navigation menu should show only the top-level silos. Use dropdowns sparingly—if you need more than two levels, the silo is too deep. Label menu items with the exact primary keyword of the parent page.

Flat navigation keeps link equity concentrated at the top. It also reduces bounce rates because users find what they need in one click. Avoid mega-menus; they scatter authority and confuse visitors.

STEP 5: CREATE A CONTEXTUAL LINKING PLAN

Every page in the silo must link to its parent, its siblings, and its children. Use anchor text that matches the target page’s primary keyword. Limit each page to 3-5 internal links to avoid dilution. Never link across silos unless the connection is natural and necessary.

Contextual links pass authority and reinforce topical relevance. They also guide users deeper into the site, increasing session duration. A spreadsheet with source, target, and anchor text keeps the plan organized.

STEP 6: WRITE CONTENT THAT FULFILLS SEARCH INTENT

Each page must answer the question implied by its primary keyword. Use the “People Also Ask” section in Google to identify sub-questions. Structure content with H2s and H3s that match these questions. Include a table, bullet points, or a video if the intent is informational.

Content that matches search intent ranks faster and converts better. It also earns sitelinks and featured snippets. Avoid thin content—each page should be at least 1,200 words for competitive niches.

STEP 7: OPTIMIZE IMAGES FOR SPEED AND SEO

Compress images to under 100 KB using WebP format. Use descriptive filenames like “tomato-planting-guide.jpg” and alt text that includes the primary keyword. Lazy-load images below the fold. Serve images via a CDN to reduce server load.

STEP 10: TEST INTERNAL LINKS FOR BROKEN OR REDIRECTED PATHS

Use Screaming Frog or Sitebulb to crawl the site. Check for 404 errors, 301 redirects, and orphaned pages. Fix broken links immediately. Redirects dilute link equity, so replace them with direct links where possible.

Broken links frustrate users and waste crawl budget. Orphaned pages don’t rank because they lack internal links. A clean link structure ensures search engines index every page efficiently.
